**Chennai, November 21, 2024** – The Tamil Nadu government announced the establishment of a new Centre of Excellence featuring an Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab, offering affordable access to startups and small businesses, at the inaugural The Hindu AI Summit 2024. Additional Chief Secretary Kumar Jayant, Department of Information Technology and Digital Services, revealed the initiative, emphasizing the state’s commitment to its recently announced AI mission. He also indicated plans to collaborate with the ICT Academy to integrate AI into higher education curricula.
The summit highlighted the transformative impact of AI across various sectors, particularly information consumption. However, concerns regarding algorithmic and cognitive biases in AI systems were also raised. Santhosh T.G., secretary of the CIO Association, stressed the need to understand and harness AI’s potential responsibly. Suresh Raman, convenor of the CII TN ICT Panel, acknowledged the challenges of scaling AI infrastructure, citing the high cost of AI hardware as a significant hurdle.
L.V. Navaneeth, CEO of The Hindu Group, underscored the pervasive influence of AI on modern life, emphasizing both its potential benefits and the critical need for ethical safeguards to prevent misuse. The summit, sponsored by several organizations including SRMIST, Sify, and the Confederation of Indian Industry, showcased a diverse range of partnerships aiming to foster AI development and adoption within the state.
