Thu Nov 21 09:13:20 UTC 2024: ## Adani Indictment Casts Shadow over Vizhinjam Port Project in Kerala

**Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – November 21, 2024** – The indictment of Gautam Adani and seven others in the United States on charges of a multibillion-dollar bribery and fraud scheme has raised concerns about the future of the Vizhinjam International Seaport project in Kerala, which is being developed by the Adani Group. Scheduled for commissioning in December 2024 or early January 2025, the port’s second phase, estimated at ₹9,700 crore (approximately $1.17 billion USD), is now in jeopardy.

While a senior Adani Group official downplayed the impact, citing the company’s financial strength and past resilience to similar controversies, the timing is particularly sensitive. The project has already faced significant delays and arbitration proceedings, with the Kerala government ultimately forgoing ₹219 crore to resolve disputes and secure central government funding. This funding, however, now requires repayment through revenue sharing, potentially costing the state an additional ₹10,000-12,000 crore.

Kerala’s Ports Minister, V.N. Vasavan, expressed confidence, highlighting the completion of the first phase and the successful trial run. He emphasized the Adani Group’s own incentive to proceed with further development, given the port’s significant potential. However, opposition legislator M. Vincent voiced concerns, suggesting the indictment casts an ominous shadow over the project’s future. The situation underscores the inherent risks associated with large-scale Public-Private Partnerships and the potential vulnerability of such projects to unforeseen legal and financial challenges.
