Thu Nov 21 14:18:17 UTC 2024: ## PUCL Condemns Killing of Maoist Leader in Mysuru Encounter

**Mysuru, November 21, 2024** – The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) Mysuru chapter has strongly condemned the killing of Vikram Gowda, a self-proclaimed Maoist leader, in a recent police encounter. The organization described Gowda as a “people’s rights activist” and called for the dismissal or demotion of the officers involved.

PUCL president Kamal Gopinath criticized the encounter, stating that it was an unacceptable response to dissent in a democracy. He highlighted the lack of injuries among police officers involved in the alleged exchange of fire, questioning the official account. Gopinath further accused the state government of failing in its responsibility to facilitate the surrender and rehabilitation of Gowda and other armed individuals.

The PUCL expressed concern that Karnataka might follow the example of other states where such encounters have become normalized, with individuals holding dissenting views being labeled as “urban Naxals.” General Secretary V. Purushottam echoed these concerns, emphasizing the disregard for human life inherent in such actions. The organization demanded a pledge from the state government to prevent similar incidents in the future.
