**Port Sudan, Sudan – November 21, 2024** – At least 40 civilians were killed in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wad Oshaib village in central Sudan’s Al-Jazira state, a medic reported to AFP. The attack, which began on Tuesday evening, November 19th, and resumed the following morning, saw the RSF targeting the village located approximately 100 kilometers north of Wad Madani, the state capital. Eyewitnesses confirmed the attack and reported widespread looting by the RSF fighters.
This latest incident is part of a month-long escalation of violence in Al-Jazira, following the defection of a key RSF commander to the Sudanese army last month. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has already displaced over 340,000 people in Al-Jazira alone, a formerly crucial agricultural region. The United Nations has warned that the violence is putting tens of thousands of lives at risk.
The UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, highlighted the dire humanitarian situation, stating that many displaced people are arriving in neighboring countries with nothing. The conflict has caused widespread displacement across Sudan, with over 11 million people uprooted, and millions more fleeing the country. The fighting has also crippled the healthcare system, with 80% of health facilities in affected areas closed. The UN describes the situation as one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent memory, with 26 million Sudanese facing acute hunger. Both sides in the conflict have been accused of war crimes, including summary executions, sieges, and looting. The crisis is compounded by reports of villages under siege, lack of essential supplies, and outbreaks of disease.
