Thu Nov 21 13:57:26 UTC 2024: ## ICC Issues Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas Official
**Amsterdam, November 21, 2024** – The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader Mohammed Deif on Thursday. The charges stem from alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the 13-month Gaza war and the October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel.
The ICC accuses Netanyahu and Gallant of intentionally depriving Gaza’s civilian population of essential supplies, including food, water, and medicine. Deif is charged with crimes linked to the October attacks, including murder, extermination, and torture. Warrants initially sought for two other Hamas leaders were withdrawn following their deaths during the conflict.
Netanyahu’s office vehemently rejected the ICC’s decision, denouncing it as “anti-Semitic” and vowing to resist pressure. The United States, a key Israeli ally, also criticized the ICC’s move, expressing support for Israel’s right to self-defense. Hamas likewise condemned the warrants.
While the warrants make Netanyahu and Gallant internationally wanted suspects, their practical impact is limited due to Israel and the US not being ICC members. The court lacks its own enforcement mechanism, relying on the cooperation of member states. The possibility of arrest, however, could restrict their international travel.
The ICC’s decision has drawn mixed reactions. Human rights groups praised the move as a step towards accountability, while Israeli opposition leaders condemned it as morally blind and a victory for terrorism. Israel has challenged the ICC’s jurisdiction, arguing that its own legal system should handle these investigations. This ICC case is separate from a parallel case at the International Court of Justice where South Africa accuses Israel of genocide.
