**Las Vegas, NV** – The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels cruised to an 80-59 victory over Pepperdine Wednesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center, showcasing a dominant defensive performance and overcoming key injuries. Despite missing starting wing Jaden Henley (foot injury) and Rob Whaley (back injury), UNLV forced 16 Pepperdine turnovers and led by as many as 38 points.
The Rebels’ balanced scoring attack saw five players reach double figures. Brooklyn Hicks led the bench, scoring a career-high 16 points (7-of-11 shooting). Julian Rishwain, making his first start in place of Henley, contributed 12 points. D.J. Thomas added 13 points and 6 assists without committing a single turnover, while Jeremiah Bear Cherry chipped in 12 points and 5 rebounds. Pape N’Diaye even contributed a three-pointer.
UNLV’s stifling defense limited Pepperdine to 28% shooting in the first half alone, building a commanding 46-17 lead at the break. The Rebels’ aggressive play resulted in a significant advantage in points off turnovers (19-5).
Coach Kevin Kruger praised his team’s response to the injuries, highlighting the increased responsibility shouldered by players like Thomas and the improved ball-handling from others. The win improves UNLV’s season record to 3-1. Their next game is Saturday against New Mexico State, also at the Thomas & Mack Center.
