**LOS ANGELES** – Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller, “Verity,” Amazon MGM announced today. Hathaway will portray Verity Crawford, a successful author incapacitated after a car accident, leaving a struggling writer (role yet to be cast) to finish her unfinished novel. The writer’s discovery of a hidden manuscript revealing disturbing secrets about Verity and her family will force her to question whether Verity is a brilliant storyteller or a dangerous psychopath.
Michael Showalter, who directed Hathaway in the recent romantic comedy “The Idea of You,” will helm the project. The script, penned by Nick Antosca, follows several previous drafts. Hathaway, Hoover, and Showalter will produce alongside several other production companies.
“Verity,” originally self-published in 2018, has become a literary phenomenon, spending months on the New York Times bestseller list and selling over a million copies in 2023 alone. The film is described as a gothic, psychosexual thriller in the vein of “Rebecca” and “Gone Girl.”
This marks Hathaway’s latest project following roles in “Mother’s Instinct,” “Mother Mary,” and “Flowervale Street,” as well as the upcoming “The Princess Diaries 3.” Showalter’s directing credits include “The Big Sick” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
The casting of the remaining roles is underway, with a theatrical release planned. The success of Hoover’s previous adaptation, “It Ends With Us,” which grossed $349 million globally, bodes well for the potential box office success of “Verity,” although a planned sequel to that film is unlikely due to behind-the-scenes issues. A film adaptation of Hoover’s “Reminders of Him” is also in development at Universal Pictures.
