GURDASPUR, PUNJAB – A voter turnout of approximately 63.91% was recorded in Punjab’s four Assembly by-elections held on Wednesday, November 20th, 2024, officials announced Thursday. The by-elections, necessitated by the incumbent MLAs’ election to the Lok Sabha, covered the Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal (SC), and Barnala constituencies.
Gidderbaha saw the highest turnout at 81.90%, followed by Dera Baba Nanak at 64.01%, Barnala at 56.34%, and Chabbewal at 53.43%. This represents a decrease compared to the 2022 Assembly elections’ turnout in these constituencies.
The main contenders were the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, and BJP, with the Shiromani Akali Dal abstaining from the contest. High-profile candidates included former Punjab finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal (BJP), and several spouses of prominent Congress MPs. The AAP currently holds a significant majority in the Punjab Assembly. The results of these by-elections are eagerly awaited.
