**Georgetown, Guyana –** Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his three-nation tour with a historic visit to Guyana, marking the first trip by an Indian head of state in over 50 years. He received an unprecedented welcome, greeted at the airport by President Irfan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips, and over a dozen cabinet ministers. At his hotel, he was further joined by Prime Ministers Dickon Mitchell of Grenada and Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados.
The visit highlighted the strong ties between India and Guyana, particularly the significant Indian diaspora. Addressing a vibrant gathering of approximately 320,000 people of Indian origin – one of the oldest such communities, having migrated over 185 years ago – PM Modi praised their contributions across various sectors. He expressed his delight at their continued connection to their roots, despite the geographical distance.
As a symbol of the close relationship, the Mayor of Georgetown presented PM Modi with the “Key to the City.” The enthusiastic community welcomed him with traditional attire, Indian flags, and chants, even presenting him with a hand-drawn sketch. Beyond the diaspora, approximately 2,000 Indian nationals reside in Guyana, primarily working in various capacities including the Indian Mission, Bank of Baroda, and local businesses.
PM Modi’s visit underscores the deepening relationship between India and Guyana and celebrates the significant contribution of the Indo-Guyanese community to the nation’s development. He is scheduled to depart Guyana on Thursday.
