MUMBAI, INDIA – November 21, 2024 – Voting concluded today in the high-stakes Maharashtra Assembly elections, with a final voter turnout of 62.05%, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). While Gadchiroli district boasted the highest turnout at 69.63%, Mumbai City recorded the lowest at 49.07%. The results will be announced on November 23.
The election saw a fierce contest between the ruling Mahayuti alliance (BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP) and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) (Congress, Shiv Sena [UBT], NCP [SP]). A total of 4,136 candidates contested for the 288 assembly seats. Leading up to the election, prominent leaders from both alliances campaigned extensively, urging voters to participate.
Pre-election surveys highlighted unemployment and inflation as key voter concerns, along with agricultural distress and the contentious issue of caste-based reservations. The opposition also focused on alleged deterioration in law and order.
Exit polls released after voting closed painted a picture of a close contest, with varying predictions. While some predicted a Mahayuti victory with a comfortable majority, others suggested a strong showing by the MVA, though falling short of the majority mark (145 seats). One poll projected Mahayuti winning 137-157 seats, MVA 126-147 seats, while others offered different estimations. The Congress dismissed the exit polls, expressing confidence in an MVA majority. Conversely, other parties expressed confidence in a Mahayuti win.
Election day also saw several incidents, including ED raids related to a bitcoin transaction case allegedly linked to the elections, and reports of booth capturing attempts. Significant seizures of cash and other illegal items totaled ₹707 crore.
Despite efforts to boost turnout, particularly in urban areas, the ECI expressed disappointment over the continued low voter participation in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Thane. Numerous prominent figures, including Bollywood celebrities, cast their votes throughout the day. The election has been characterized by intense campaigning, allegations of vote buying and attempts to influence the outcome. The final results will determine the future governance of Maharashtra.
