Wed Nov 20 06:37:40 UTC 2024: ## Stock Markets Closed for Maharashtra Elections

**Mumbai, November 20, 2024** – The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) are closed today due to the Maharashtra Assembly Elections. Trading is halted across all segments, including equities, derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing. This is one of 16 holidays listed on the exchanges’ annual calendar, with only two remaining for the year.

The closure follows a volatile trading session on Tuesday. While the BSE Sensex initially surged over 1,000 points, gains were erased by the close, leaving the index with a modest 0.31% increase, closing at 77,578.38. The NSE Nifty50 mirrored this trend, rising 0.28% to 23,518.50.

Despite the slight gains, the Nifty50 remains in correction territory, down almost 10% from its September high. Continued selling by Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), who withdrew Rs 22,420 crore in the first half of November alone, contributes to the bearish sentiment. The Nifty50’s failure to sustain a recovery above its 200-day exponential moving average further underscores investor caution. Investors can check the official NSE and BSE websites for future holiday schedules.
