**Cape Canaveral, FL** – The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched its latest communications satellite, GSAT-20, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral on November 19th. This marks the first major commercial partnership between ISRO and the American aerospace manufacturer, signifying a significant shift in India’s space launch strategy.
The 4,700 kg GSAT-20, exceeding the capacity of India’s current launch vehicles, will provide crucial internet and communication services across India, including remote areas, for the next 14 years. Its Ka-band capabilities offer a substantial 48Gbps capacity, boosting broadband and in-flight connectivity. The satellite utilizes 32 user beams, with a focus on providing enhanced coverage to the Northeast region.
The choice of SpaceX was driven by the weight limitations of ISRO’s rockets, with its heaviest, the LVM-3, only capable of launching 4,000 kg. The unavailability of other options, including Arianespace due to a lack of operational rockets and Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, made SpaceX the optimal solution. The partnership also demonstrates India’s expanding collaboration within the international space community.
The launch cost an estimated $60-70 million, marking a considerable investment in the collaboration. This agreement follows another between SpaceX and ISRO to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) for $60 million. The Falcon 9 rocket, a reusable orbital-class rocket, boasts impressive statistics, with over 396 total launches and a significant number of successful landings and reflights. This reusability contributes to cost reductions in space access. The partnership represents a crucial step for New Space India Limited (NSIL) and signals a new era for India’s space program.
