**Colombo, November 17, 2024** – President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s National People’s Power (NPP) coalition achieved a landslide victory in Sri Lanka’s snap parliamentary elections, securing a two-thirds majority – an unprecedented feat in the country’s history. Preliminary results from the November 14th vote reveal a staggering mandate, attributed largely to a significant shift in support from ethnic minority communities.
The NPP’s success is particularly notable in the Northern, Eastern, Central, and Southern Hill Country provinces, traditionally strongholds of regional parties. In the Northern and Eastern provinces, the NPP won 12 out of 28 seats, surpassing regional parties in all but one district. This includes historic gains in Jaffna and Vanni, traditionally dominated by Tamil nationalist parties.
Analysts attribute this shift to widespread disillusionment with long-standing Tamil politicians, who are accused of failing to deliver on promises of progress and economic recovery fifteen years after the end of the civil war. While the fragmented nature of the Tamil nationalist movement also contributed, the NPP’s focus on addressing economic hardships – such as mounting household debt and joblessness – resonated strongly with voters.
Despite the NPP’s gains, the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) still secured eight seats. ITAK members acknowledge challenges, including divisive agendas pushed by some diaspora groups, but emphasize the need for Tamil nationalist parties to prioritize economic issues alongside political goals. Similarly, while the NPP made inroads with the Muslim community, prominent Muslim leaders retained their seats.
The NPP’s success also extended to the Hill Country, where it secured victories in districts previously dominated by the Ceylon Workers’ Congress and Tamil Progressive Alliance. The NPP’s ground-level campaigning, focusing on issues like wages, land rights, and education, particularly resonated with young voters and helped secure the first-ever election of Malaiyaha Tamil women to Parliament.
The sweeping victory represents a significant realignment of Sri Lankan politics, with ethnic minorities placing their trust in President Dissanayake’s coalition. The NPP now faces the challenge of fulfilling its promises to address the economic and social needs of all Sri Lankans.
