Patan, Gujarat – November 18, 2024 – A first-year MBBS student, Anil Methaniya, 18, died at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur, Patan, after allegedly enduring three hours of ragging by 15 senior students. Police have arrested the 15 second-year students, all of whom have been suspended from the college.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed at Balisana police station, the incident occurred on Saturday night, November 16th. The seniors summoned 11 first-year students, including Methaniya, to a hostel room under the guise of an “introduction.” They were then subjected to hours of forced singing, dancing, verbal abuse, and confinement. Methaniya collapsed around midnight and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The FIR charges the 15 accused with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly, and using obscene words under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The college has launched an internal investigation and the anti-ragging committee has interviewed all involved students. College dean Dr. Hardik Shah confirmed Methaniya’s death and the circumstances surrounding it. The college has suspended the accused students from both hostel and academic activities pending further investigation. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stricter measures against ragging in educational institutions.
