**Chennai, November 18, 2024** – The Chennai Food Safety Department issued a stern warning to food business operators (FBOs) today, prohibiting the use of non-food grade plastics for packaging food items. A letter sent to the Chennai Hotel Association emphasized that using such materials violates the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The department’s Designated Officer, P. Satheesh Kumar, stressed the importance of using only food-grade and biodegradable packaging materials. He highlighted the penalties for non-compliance: ₹2,000 for a first offense, ₹5,000 for a second, and ₹10,000 for a third, along with potential cancellation of the registration certificate. Continued violations will result in further action under the Food Safety and Standards Act and Rules, 2011. The crackdown follows a circular from the Commissioner of Food Safety outlining these penalties and authorizing inspections.
