**KOCHI, November 18, 2024** – A protest demanding the decommissioning of the 129-year-old Mullapperiyar dam was held in Kakkanad on Sunday. Organized by the Mullapperiyar Dam Action Council, the Society for the Inculcation of Values in Youth (SIVY), and Mahila Swaraj Kerala, the demonstration called for the immediate lowering of the reservoir water level to 100 feet.
Idukki resident Russel Joy, a long-time advocate for the dam’s decommissioning, inaugurated the protest, which was presided over by Prof. Susan John Puthusseril. Joy highlighted the potential catastrophic consequences of a dam breach, citing scientific studies indicating a high risk of failure and emphasizing the unpredictable path of the resulting floodwaters.
Several activists, including Felix Pulloodan, Pramod Joshua, Eloor Gopinath, Vamalochanan K.K., Radhakrishnan Kadavunkal, Lawrence P.A., and Rajesh P.N., also addressed the gathering, reiterating their concerns about the dam’s safety and the urgent need for its decommissioning.
