Mon Nov 18 03:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Hyderabad to Transition to Electric Bus Fleet; Stricter Road Safety Enforcement Planned
**Hyderabad, November 17, 2024** – The Telangana government announced a major initiative to electrify Hyderabad’s public transport system and strengthen road safety measures. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar revealed that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has approved a plan to replace the existing fleet of 3,000 buses within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits with electric vehicles. This transition will be phased, with the necessary charging infrastructure developed concurrently.
The announcement comes alongside the government’s existing 15-year-old vehicle scrapping policy and the establishment of automated vehicle testing centers. Telangana will also join the Centre’s Vahan Sarathy scheme, a national vehicle registration and information platform.
Addressing the high number of road accidents – an average of 20 fatalities daily – the Minister stressed a commitment to stricter enforcement of road safety rules. Newly recruited Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors, equipped with new uniforms and special enforcement vehicles, will play a key role in this initiative.
Minister Prabhakar also clarified that the government is addressing pending promotions within the Transport Department and assured that the quality of electric vehicles remains the manufacturer’s responsibility, dismissing concerns about safety related to the transition.
