**Villupuram, Tamil Nadu – November 17, 2024** – A 22-year-old woman, Swetha, and her boyfriend, Sathish Kumar, were arrested on Friday for the murder of Swetha’s mother-in-law, Rani. Rani died from severe burn injuries sustained on Deepavali eve, initially believed to be an accident or self-immolation.
Police investigations, prompted by suspicions raised by Rani’s younger son, revealed that Swetha and Sathish doused Rani with kerosene and set her ablaze. Swetha, who married Rani’s elder son Karunamurthi in July, was the only person home at the time of the incident. Police suspect the motive was Rani’s discovery of Swetha’s illicit affair with Sathish Kumar. Swetha was initially seen as a helpful neighbour alerting others to the fire. Rani was admitted to JIPMER hospital but succumbed to her injuries the following day. Both Swetha and Sathish are currently in police custody.
