IMPHAL, Manipur — Fresh violence erupted in Manipur on Saturday night, leaving the northeastern state in a precarious situation. The unrest, sparked by the discovery of six bodies, including those of two women and a child, in the Barak River, led to widespread protests and attacks on the residences of three state ministers and six MLAs, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s ancestral home.

Angry protestors, fueled by the killings which they attribute to militants in Jiribam district, torched several homes. Security forces responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, preventing further damage to Singh’s residence. At least 23 people involved in the violence have been arrested.

In response to the escalating violence, the government imposed indefinite prohibitory orders in five districts and suspended internet services in parts of the state. A curfew has also been imposed in Imphal. Eight people were injured during the clashes.

The National People’s Party (NPP), which holds seven seats in the state assembly, has withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government, citing the deteriorating law and order situation. However, the BJP retains its majority.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah cancelled his election rallies in Maharashtra and returned to Delhi to address the crisis, chairing a high-level security meeting on Sunday and scheduling a further review. The Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is also scheduled to visit Manipur.

The Congress party has strongly criticized the BJP government’s handling of the situation, alleging that the party is deliberately allowing the violence to continue. Opposition leaders have called for Prime Minister Modi to visit the state and work towards restoring peace. The situation remains tense and volatile.
