**Kolkata, India** – A Trinamool Congress councillor narrowly escaped death last night in Kolkata’s Kasba area after a gun malfunction foiled an assassination attempt. CCTV footage captured the dramatic incident, showing two assailants on a scooter approaching Councillor Sushanta Ghosh as he sat outside his home.
One assailant pulled out a firearm and attempted to shoot Ghosh twice, but the weapon failed to discharge. Ghosh, reacting swiftly, chased the attacker after he attempted a getaway. The assailant fell, leading to a foot chase and a subsequent beating by a crowd before his apprehension.
In a video circulating online, the suspect, reportedly hired from Bihar, confessed to being given only a photograph of Ghosh and instructions to kill him, denying receiving any payment. Police sources suspect the attack stemmed from local political rivalries.
Councillor Ghosh, who has served for 12 years, expressed shock and bewilderment at the attack, stating he had no idea who would want him dead. Local MP Mala Roy and MLA Javed Khan visited him following the incident. The suspect is currently in police custody, and investigations are underway.
