Sat Nov 16 01:02:10 IST 2024: ## Chennai’s Largest Desalination Plant 35% Complete
**Chennai, November 16, 2024** – Construction of Chennai’s fourth and largest desalination plant is progressing steadily, with approximately 35% of the work completed, officials announced today. The Rs. 4,276 crore project, launched in August 2023, is being built along the East Coast Road at Perur and is expected to be operational by 2027.
The plant, boasting a capacity to treat 400 million liters of seawater daily, will serve a population of 22.67 lakh across Greater Chennai Corporation, Tambaram Corporation, and 20 neighboring local bodies. Funded in part by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project is currently focused on constructing key components including intake structures, reverse osmosis permeate tanks, clear water reservoirs, and sludge thickeners. Support facilities like warehouses and administrative buildings are also under construction. Preliminary work on a 1.1 km high-density polyethylene pipeline for seawater intake and brine discharge is underway.
The plant will utilize advanced technology, including dissolved air floatation to remove impurities and gravity dual media filters to ensure high-quality drinking water. A 59 km pipeline will distribute water to various areas, reaching as far as Porur. Chennai Metrowater Managing Director T.G. Vinay led a team in reviewing the project’s progress.
