**New Delhi, November 16, 2024** – New Delhi is battling severe air pollution, with the city shrouded in thick smog. While air quality improved slightly from “severe” to “very poor” on Friday, it remains the worst in the country and is expected to persist for the next six days. In response to the crisis, the Delhi government implemented a series of stringent anti-pollution measures, following stricter curbs announced by the Commission for Air Quality Management.
These measures include a ban on private BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles, a prohibition on the entry of inter-state non-electric and non-CNG buses, restrictions on certain construction activities, and staggered timings for government offices. Violators of the vehicle restrictions face a ₹20,000 fine.
To bolster public transport, the Delhi Transport Corporation will operate 106 shuttle bus services, conducting 1,844 trips, including 40 services specifically for government employees. The Delhi Metro will also add 60 extra trips.
Chief Minister Atishi announced staggered timings for government offices: Central government offices will operate from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Delhi government offices from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and municipal corporation offices from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena expressed criticism, noting the delay in implementing these measures.
Schools for students up to Class 5 remain closed, with classes conducted online. The effectiveness of this measure will be evaluated from Monday onwards. The situation highlights the ongoing struggle to combat air pollution in the Indian capital.
