**Vijayawada, November 16, 2024** – Andhra Pradesh’s Human Resources Development Minister, N. Lokesh, announced sweeping reforms for the state’s Intermediate education system, aiming to bring it up to the standards of prominent private institutions like Narayana Colleges. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, Mr. Lokesh stated that the government is working to streamline the system, focusing on infrastructure improvements, faculty development, and enhanced study materials.
The minister revealed that consultations are underway with P. Narayana, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development and head of the Narayana group of institutions, to gather expert advice on these reforms. A ranking mechanism for government schools is also planned to further incentivize improvements.
Addressing concerns about low admission rates in government degree colleges (currently at 50%), Mr. Lokesh attributed the issue to dilapidated buildings and inadequate faculty. He announced plans to transform these colleges into industry-centric institutions. Similarly, he acknowledged a significant drop in admissions to government junior colleges due to staff shortages, particularly a lack of teachers. However, he noted a positive increase of over 15,000 admissions since the NDA government came to power.
The government is also implementing bridge courses for students categorized as needing extra support in specific subjects. Mr. Lokesh highlighted the recent distribution of textbooks, a first in five years, as a crucial step toward improving the educational experience. The overall goal, he emphasized, is to make government colleges competitive with leading private institutions.
