Fri Nov 15 11:45:24 IST 2024: ## Tonali’s Goal Secures Italy’s Quarterfinal Spot in Nations League

**Brussels, Belgium -** Italy has secured its place in the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Belgium in Brussels on Thursday. The lone goal came from Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, marking his first international goal.

Tonali’s strike came in the 10th minute, giving Italy a crucial lead. The result guarantees Italy’s qualification for the last eight, even with a draw against either Belgium or France in their final group stage match.

The match was a significant comeback for Tonali, who was suspended for ten months for betting on football matches, including some involving his former team AC Milan. This ban deprived him of the opportunity to participate in Italy’s disappointing Euro 2024 campaign.

Since then, under Luciano Spalletti, Italy has displayed a renewed energy, remaining unbeaten in the Nations League group stage.

Belgium, meanwhile, is six points behind second-placed France and can no longer reach the quarterfinals after failing to win against France and Israel.

The match saw Romelu Lukaku captain Belgium for the first time since their Euro 2024 campaign. Despite the loss, Belgium dominated possession in the second half and nearly equalized through Lukaku and Wout Faes. However, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s impressive goalkeeping and the post denied Belgium a result.

Italy will now face France in a decisive group stage clash at the San Siro on Sunday, with both teams vying for first place in Group A2.
