Fri Nov 15 18:54:56 IST 2024: ## Government Hostels in Nagapattinam Suffer from Staff Shortages, Leading to Student Dropouts

**Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu:** Government hostels under the Adi Dravidar Welfare (ADW) Department in Nagapattinam are facing a critical staffing crisis, resulting in student dropouts and the closure of several facilities. For over four years, these hostels have been grappling with unfilled warden positions and a complete lack of watchmen in boys’ hostels.

Out of the 11 hostels in the district, two were shut down this year due to low student enrollment. The remaining nine hostels, including four for girls and five for boys, are struggling with severe staff shortages. None of the boys’ hostels have watchmen, and a mere four wardens are responsible for managing all nine hostels, leaving five warden positions vacant.

The lack of supervision, particularly at night, has created a dangerous environment for students. Boys are leaving the hostels at night, potentially falling prey to bad influences and ultimately dropping out. This alarming situation has been exacerbated by the absence of watchmen, leaving students vulnerable during nighttime hours.

A Class X student from one of the hostels expressed deep concern about the lack of guidance and supervision, stating that the absence of a warden during most of the week leaves them susceptible to negative influences.

Warden staff have also voiced their concerns, highlighting the immense challenges of managing multiple hostels with limited resources. They emphasized the importance of appointing watchmen to ensure the safety and well-being of students. However, the department has cited inadequate funding as a primary obstacle in filling these positions.

Subash Chandra Bose, district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, underlined the importance of providing adequate supervision for students in the vulnerable 6-12 age group. He urged the government to prioritize the appointment of qualified wardens and watchmen in all hostels to ensure students’ safety and educational growth.

The ADW Department has acknowledged the staffing issues and lack of funds and has informed the government of the situation. They are hoping for swift action from the government to address the critical staffing shortage and ensure the well-being of students residing in these hostels.
