Fri Nov 15 13:04:27 UTC 2024: ## Sky’s the Limit: Supermoon, Meteor Shower, and Star Cluster Align this Weekend

Get ready for a celestial spectacle this weekend as the last supermoon of 2024, the “Beaver Moon,” reaches peak brightness on Friday, November 15th at 4:29 pm Eastern Time (21:29 GMT). This supermoon, coinciding with the Leonid meteor shower and the Pleiades star cluster, promises an unforgettable night sky viewing experience.

The Beaver Moon, named for the time when beavers start building their winter lodges, will appear larger and brighter than usual as it reaches its closest point to Earth, approximately 361,867km (225,000 miles) away. Though its full phase will officially occur on Friday, observers worldwide can enjoy its breathtaking beauty throughout the night.

Adding to the celestial charm, the Leonid meteor shower will peak this weekend, offering viewers a chance to witness fast-moving meteors traveling at 70km/second (44 mps). These brilliant streaks of light, originating from the Tempel-Tuttle comet, are known for their distinct colors. Although a Leonid storm, with hundreds or even thousands of meteors per hour, occurs only every 33 years, this year’s shower promises a mesmerizing display.

As a final touch, the Pleiades star cluster will align with the full moon, creating a stunning celestial backdrop. This recognizable pattern of stars, located approximately 410 lightyears from Earth in the constellation Taurus, will be partially obscured by the moon’s brightness, but still visible.

The supermoon’s peak illumination time will vary by location, with India experiencing it on Saturday at 2:58 am (21:29 GMT), London at 21:29 on Friday, and the Gulf countries at 00:29 GMT on Saturday.

To enjoy the spectacle, simply step outside after sunset and look up. For optimal viewing, NASA recommends using binoculars with a magnification of at least 7, and a tripod for added stability.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to witness the convergence of a supermoon, a meteor shower, and a star cluster. It’s a celestial event that promises to leave you awestruck.
