**Kokopo, Papua New Guinea – November 15, 2024** – A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck off the coast of eastern Papua New Guinea on Friday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which occurred at a depth of 51 kilometers, was located approximately 123 kilometers from the closest town of Kokopo.

While the earthquake was described as “intense” by a hotel receptionist in Kokopo, Vernon Gash, who reported that it lasted for less than a minute, no immediate reports of significant damage have emerged. The Papua New Guinea National Disaster Centre is currently assessing the situation for potential damage.

Fortunately, no tsunami warnings were issued following the earthquake.
