Fri Nov 15 12:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Kanguva: A Costly Spectacle Lacking Substance
Suriya’s latest action-adventure film, Kanguva, aimed for pan-Indian success with a grand spectacle and a story spanning two timelines, but falls short of its ambitious goals. Despite a hefty budget and a cast featuring Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, and Yogi Babu, the film suffers from a weak script and underwhelming execution.
Set in the 1100s, the film follows Kanguva, a prince who defends his clan against a foreign invader. The present-day storyline features Suriya as a bounty hunter entangled with a child who bears a striking resemblance to the one from the past. While the film uses recurring shots of the moon to symbolize a connection between the two timelines, the execution falls flat.
Despite impressive cinematography and set designs, the film is riddled with clunky action sequences, weak character development, and a predictable plot. The performances are hampered by a lackluster script, with even Suriya’s dedication unable to salvage the film.
Critics have pointed to the film’s deafening sound levels, lack of emotional depth, and reliance on spectacle over substance. The film’s attempt to emulate the success of pan-Indian hits like Baahubali and RRR ultimately fails to deliver the same impactful storytelling and captivating characters.
Kanguva serves as a reminder that a high budget does not guarantee success. The film industry needs to prioritize quality writing and storytelling over mere spectacle. Tamil cinema, known for its grounded and well-written works, seems to be struggling to escape the “fear of missing out” on the pan-Indian trend, leading to hastily produced films that lack heart and substance.
