Suriya, the star of South Indian cinema, returns to the screen with “Kanguva,” a period action drama directed by Siva. With a whopping budget of 350 crores, the film garnered immense hype due to Surya’s dual role and Devi Sri Prasad’s music. However, despite the high-octane action sequences, the film falls short on plot and emotional connection.
The story takes place in two time periods: 1070 AD and 2024. Suriya plays the dual role of Kanguva, a warrior in the ancient past, and Francis, a bounty hunter in the modern era. The film’s central conflict involves a hidden war in the past, but the modern day storyline feels weak and underdeveloped.
While Surya delivers a valiant performance as Kanguva, his portrayal of Francis is underwhelming. Bobby Deol, cast as the antagonist, feels underutilized and his character lacks depth. The comedic performances of Yogi Babu and Redin Kingsley fall flat with the Telugu audience.
Young actor Nandan shines in his role as a key character who connects the past and present, despite a few emotional missteps.
The technical aspects of the film are commendable, especially the music by Devi Sri Prasad and the cinematography by Vetri Palanisamy. The film’s fight sequences are visually impressive, but unfortunately, the graphics fail to elevate the action to the desired level.
Ultimately, “Kanguva” lacks a strong narrative to hold the audience’s attention. While the action is thrilling and Surya’s performance is convincing, the film struggles to deliver a compelling emotional connection. The modern-day storyline feels tacked-on and the film fails to make the most of its potential.
