**Hyderabad:** ‘Kanguva,’ the latest magnum opus from director Siva featuring Kollywood superstar Surya, has finally hit the screens. The epic fantasy action film, boasting a massive budget of 300 crores, was met with much fanfare. However, while the visual spectacle and Surya’s performance shine, the story falls short of expectations.
The narrative weaves together a timeless folk tale from a thousand years ago with a modern-day bounty hunter, Francis (Surya). While the director’s vision is evident in the rich, visually captivating world created, the story itself struggles to grip the audience. The film’s initial 20 minutes, trying to connect the ancient fantasy with present day, feels unnecessarily long and doesn’t quite draw the viewer in.
While Surya delivers a powerful performance in both roles, Francis and the ancient warrior Kanguva, the intricate world-building and captivating visuals fall short of truly immersing the audience. The introduction of five distinct clans, the Pranavakona, Kapala Kona, Sagara Kona, Aranya Kona, and Hima Kona, leaves the audience feeling overwhelmed and disengaged. The lack of proper character development for these clans and their roles in the narrative further hinders the impact.
The film’s action sequences are visually impressive, especially the battles and emotional scenes involving Kanguva and Pulava. However, the overall story struggles to match the visual grandeur, feeling somewhat underdeveloped and lacking the emotional depth of similar epics like ‘Baahubali.’
Despite its weaknesses, ‘Kanguva’ boasts technical brilliance. Vetri’s cinematography transports the audience back in time, while Devi Sri Prasad’s music, though sometimes overused, enhances the film’s overall impact.
Ultimately, ‘Kanguva’ is a visually stunning film that falls short of expectations on the story front. While Surya’s acting and the film’s technical brilliance are commendable, the lack of a truly engaging narrative leaves the viewer wanting more.
