Fri Nov 15 17:40:32 IST 2024: ## Ambur Gynaecologist Transferred After Mother and Child Die at Taluk Hospital

**TIRUPATTUR:** A senior gynaecologist at the Government Taluk Hospital in Ambur has been transferred to the Government District Headquarters Hospital in Tirupattur following the death of a mother and her newborn baby.

The transfer of Dr. K. Shyamala was ordered by the Joint Director of Health Services (JDSS), Tirupattur, S. Kannagi, following an inquiry into the incident. The action comes after the death of 26-year-old V. Durga Devi on Wednesday, November 13, three days after she delivered a baby girl at the taluk hospital.

Durga Devi’s family alleges that she died due to medical negligence. They blocked the Ambur-Pernambut Main Road on Thursday, accusing the hospital staff of failing to provide adequate care. The newborn girl also died at the Government Medical College Hospital in Dharmapuri on Thursday, where she had been shifted after her mother’s death.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Devi, a resident of Devanapuram village near Ambur, had been consulting Dr. Shyamala throughout her pregnancy. On November 10, after she complained of labor pain, Devi was taken to the taluk hospital, where she delivered the baby. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly. She was referred to the government hospital in Tirupattur and later to the government hospital in Dharmapuri, where she died on Wednesday.

Dr. Kannagi stated that the transfer is a measure to ensure adequate care for patients, including expectant mothers. She emphasized that staff are responsible for the care provided to patients.
