**TIRUPPUR, INDIA -** A former employee of the Commercial Tax Department in Tiruppur has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment for accepting a bribe. K. Semakumar, an assistant at the Palladam Commercial Tax Office, was found guilty of demanding and accepting ₹3,000 from a complainant named Selvamani in 2010. The bribe was allegedly in exchange for issuing a Tax Identification Number and Central Sales Tax number in the name of Selvamani’s sister, Dhanalakshmi.

The case was registered against Semakumar under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act on May 12, 2010. On Thursday, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Special Judge P. Chelladurai sentenced Semakumar to three years of imprisonment and levied a fine of ₹4,000 on two counts.
