**New Delhi, November 14, 2024:** India’s wholesale price inflation (WPI) surged to 2.4% in October, up from 1.84% in September, driven by a significant rise in food prices. According to data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry, food prices jumped by 11.6% in October, marking a more than two-year high.
Vegetable prices were the biggest contributors to the surge, increasing by over 63% compared to September’s already high 49%. Potato prices saw a dramatic increase, rising from 78.1% to 78.7% inflation, while onion inflation halved from 78.8% to 39.25%.
The Wholesale Food Index saw a 3% monthly jump, attributed to the rise in food prices, manufactured food products, other manufacturing sectors, machinery & equipment, and motor vehicles.
Manufactured products also saw inflation climb to 1.5% in October, up from 1% in the previous two months. Inflation in primary articles more than tripled from August, reaching 8.1%.
The rising food prices are likely to put pressure on household budgets and could exacerbate concerns about inflation in India.
