Thu Nov 14 11:38:19 UTC 2024: ## Meghalaya Insurgent Group HNLC Banned for Five Years
**New Delhi, November 14, 2024:** The Indian government has declared the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a Meghalaya-based insurgent group, a banned organization for five years. The decision, announced by the Union Home Ministry today, comes in response to the group’s violent activities and its declared objective of seceding areas of Meghalaya primarily inhabited by Khasi and Jaintia tribes.
The Ministry cited the HNLC’s involvement in 48 criminal cases, including multiple explosions and planting of explosives in Meghalaya, between November 2019 and June 2024. The group is also accused of intimidation and extortion of civilians to fund its operations and maintaining ties with other northeastern insurgent groups.
The Ministry declared the HNLC, along with all its factions and front organizations, a threat to the sovereignty and integrity of India, justifying the ban under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
