**Denpasar, Indonesia** – Flights to Bali resumed on Thursday after a series of volcanic eruptions forced the cancellation of numerous routes. The airport had been closed due to a massive ash cloud spewed by Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located on a nearby island.
The volcano has erupted over a dozen times in the past two weeks, tragically claiming the lives of nine people and prompting the evacuation of thousands.
On Wednesday, 83 international routes were cancelled as the volcano shot a nine-kilometer (5.6-mile) column of ash into the sky. However, improved conditions allowed airlines to resume services on Thursday, including Qantas, Jetstar, AirAsia, Virgin Australia, and Scoot.
Despite the resumption of flights, the airport recorded 32 further international flight cancellations as of 3 am Thursday, due to ongoing volcanic activity. However, officials reported that the ash cloud had moved away from the airport.
While the airport in Labuan Bajo, a tourist hotspot near the volcano, reopened on Thursday, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki continued to erupt overnight, spewing lava and ash.
The volcanic activity has significantly impacted Bali’s economy, which heavily relies on tourism. Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is known for its frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
