**Chennai, November 14, 2024:** In response to the recent attack on a senior oncologist at the Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital (KCSSH), the Tamil Nadu government has announced the implementation of a color-coded tag system for patient attendants in all government hospitals across the state.
The tag system, already piloted at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), will be rolled out in phases to 36 government medical college hospitals, 37 district headquarters hospitals, and 320 taluk hospitals.
The system, utilizing four distinct colors (green, red, yellow, and blue), will designate the patient’s ward and aid in regulating crowding, ensuring safety for both patients and healthcare professionals.
The move comes after a surge in patient visits to government hospitals, driven by increased trust and improved infrastructure. Following the incident at the KCSSH, where a patient’s son stabbed a senior medical oncologist, the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association (TNGDA) had launched a state-wide strike. However, after talks with 11 doctor and nurse associations, the strike was called off, with medical services remaining unaffected.
The state government has also announced the installation of metal detectors and bag scanners in a pilot project in one or two hospitals, aiming to enhance security measures on hospital campuses.
These steps are part of a comprehensive security plan, which includes continuous CCTV monitoring, improved lighting, and strengthening police outposts across government hospitals, to ensure the safety of all medical staff.
