Wed Nov 13 12:32:23 UTC 2024: ## Church of England Faces Calls for Accountability Following Abuse Scandal

The Church of England is facing mounting pressure to hold individuals accountable for covering up child abuse allegations, following the resignation of Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby on Tuesday.

Welby stepped down after a report revealed failings in the handling of abuse cases against John Smyth, a barrister who abused at least 115 children and young men before his death. The report found that Welby was misinformed about the actions taken regarding Smyth’s abuse, leading to calls for the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, to investigate the cover-up.

“We… know that some people pretty systematically covered this up and that those people do need to be brought to account,” stated Cottrell, the second-most senior bishop in the Church of England.

Specifically, calls for resignation have been directed at Bishop of Lincoln, Stephen Conway. Conway, who was briefed about the abuse allegations in 2013, has been accused of failing to take adequate action. While Conway has apologized for not being more rigorous in his pursuit of the matter, he maintains that he acted within his authority as a bishop.

The report highlights a broader issue within the Church of England, highlighting the challenge of safeguarding such a large and dispersed organization. “Safeguarding such an organization is a challenge,” admitted Cottrell.

The scandal comes amidst the Church’s ongoing struggle to balance liberal and conservative factions on issues like homosexual rights and women clergy. Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba, head of Uganda’s Anglican Church, has criticized Welby for dividing the global Anglican communion by opposing a strict anti-homosexuality law in Uganda.

The Church of England now faces a difficult task in restoring trust and ensuring that those responsible for covering up abuse are held accountable. The scandal has exposed deep-seated failings within the institution, leaving many questioning its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals.
