**Chennai:** A doctor at the Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Chennai was brutally attacked and stabbed multiple times by the son of a former patient on Wednesday, prompting outrage and calls for stronger security measures for medical professionals.
Dr. Balaji, who works at the Guindy Kalaignar Centenary Super Specialty Hospital, sustained seven stab wounds during the assault and is currently receiving treatment. The accused, Vignesh, a Chennai resident, was arrested immediately after the incident.
According to reports, Vignesh’s mother, a cancer patient, was previously treated at the hospital for six months before being transferred to a private facility. On Sunday, Vignesh visited the cancer ward and attacked Dr. Balaji with a knife, allegedly fueled by misinformation from doctors at the private hospital.
Following the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed shock and ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter. He also instructed that Dr. Balaji receive the necessary medical care and pledged to take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin stated that the accused was misled by doctors at the private hospital, leading to the attack.
State Health Minister Ma Subramanian assured swift action, confirming that two individuals have been arrested and further investigations are ongoing.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with state BJP Chief K. Annamalai criticizing the DMK government for its alleged inaction in addressing attacks on doctors. He highlighted the repeated assaults on medical professionals and questioned the government’s commitment to ensuring their safety.
This incident comes at a time when doctors across India are demanding stricter security measures at hospitals and stronger laws to protect them from attacks. The demand has intensified following the recent tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata.
