**New Delhi, November 13, 2024** – India’s Power Minister, Manohar Lal, has urged states that lack coal resources to consider setting up nuclear-based power plants. In a statement released by the government, the minister also requested states to identify and list their power utilities on the stock exchange to attract investment and boost the power sector’s growth.
This call comes as India aims to increase its nuclear power capacity from 8 gigawatts to 20 gigawatts by 2032. The government has also proposed partnerships with private companies to develop smaller nuclear reactors, aligning with the goal of reducing carbon emissions.
The minister suggested utilizing sites of decommissioned coal-based thermal power plants for potential nuclear plant construction. While India’s strict nuclear compensation laws have previously hindered negotiations with foreign power plant builders like General Electric and Westinghouse, the government appears committed to expanding nuclear energy generation.
The minister’s call for improved transmission systems and increased investment reflects India’s focus on adding renewable energy capacity to its grid.
