**PARIS, FRANCE -** A proposed ban on children under 16 attending bullfights in France is set to be debated in the Senate this week, igniting a heated debate between animal rights activists and staunch supporters of the centuries-old tradition.
Despite being outlawed in most of France, bullfighting remains legal in the southern regions, where it is seen as a cultural cornerstone. The new bill, introduced by centrist Senator Samantha Cazebonne, aims to protect children from exposure to violence by prohibiting them from attending bullfights and cockfights.
“Allowing these traumatic shows to take place in the presence of children is inconsistent with the rest of our legislation,” stated Senator Arnaud Bazin, a veterinarian by training.
However, the legislation is facing strong opposition from bullfighting enthusiasts, who see it as an attack on their cultural heritage and a threat to the economic well-being of “bull towns” that depend on tourism linked to the spectacle.
“The aim is to kill off bullfighting,” argued Christine Banuls, a member of the La Embestida bullfighting association. “If we don’t pass on the values of bullfighting to children, they won’t go to the bullring and it will stop.”
Max Brisson, a conservative senator, echoed this sentiment, stating that the bill “flouts local freedoms.”
While public opinion leans towards banning bullfighting in France, a similar bill failed in 2022, highlighting the political complexities surrounding the issue. The upcoming vote, scheduled for Thursday, is unlikely to result in the bill’s passage, as the right-wing dominated Senate is expected to reject it.
Despite the controversy, the debate has shed light on the evolving societal attitudes towards bullfighting, which is legal in only eight countries worldwide. While some argue that children should be shielded from the violence, others see it as a cultural experience that fosters an appreciation for tradition and heritage.
