**Chennai, India:** A government doctor was severely injured after being stabbed multiple times by a patient’s son at the Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Chennai on Wednesday. The victim, Dr. Balaji Jaganathan, is currently in critical condition in the ICU, suffering from injuries to his neck, ear, forehead, back, and stomach.
The accused, Vignesh, a Chennai resident, allegedly attacked Dr. Balaji because he was dissatisfied with the treatment his mother was receiving at the hospital. His mother had previously undergone chemotherapy at the facility.
Vignesh reportedly attempted to flee the scene after the attack but was apprehended and handed over to the police.
Following the shocking incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his concern and ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals, stating, “The selfless work of our government doctors in providing appropriate treatment to patients at government hospitals is immeasurable. It is our duty to ensure their safety. The government will take all measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”
State Health Minister Ma Subramanian also promised swift action in response to the attack.
Condemning the incident, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan highlighted the “insecure situation of doctors in government hospitals in Tamil Nadu.” She stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of doctors and prayed for Dr. Balaji’s full recovery.
The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of healthcare workers and the need for stronger measures to protect them from violence.
