**Chennai, India:** A doctor at a Chennai hospital was attacked and stabbed multiple times by a young man whose mother was a cancer patient under the doctor’s care. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at the Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in the Guindy neighborhood.
Dr. Balaji, an oncologist and heart patient, suffered injuries to his upper chest, head, and back. He was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is reportedly in stable condition. The attacker, suspected to be a 26-year-old, was apprehended by hospital staff and handed over to the police. He allegedly used a small knife hidden on his person to stab the doctor, believing that Dr. Balaji had prescribed incorrect medication to his mother.
Following the attack, doctors at the hospital began a protest and suspended non-emergency treatment.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed shock and outrage over the incident. He ordered an inquiry into the attack and assured medical aid for Dr. Balaji. He also promised to implement measures to ensure such attacks do not occur in the future.
“The selfless work of our government doctors in providing treatment to patients regardless of the time is immeasurable,” Stalin stated in a message on X (formerly Twitter). “The government will take measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.”
The incident comes on the heels of the recent rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. The attack in Chennai once again highlights the ongoing issue of healthcare worker safety in India, drawing attention to the need for improved security measures at hospitals and greater protection for medical professionals.
