Tue Nov 12 00:11:08 UTC 2024: ## Trump’s Silence on Imran Khan’s Imprisonment Sparks Debate in Pakistan
**WASHINGTON, D.C. -** The potential role of U.S. President Donald Trump in the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan from prison has sparked heated debate in Pakistan, with both government and opposition leaders weighing in.
While U.S. media has focused on other global issues, the question of Trump’s stance on Khan’s imprisonment remains unanswered.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, buoyed by Khan’s congratulatory message to Trump and a meeting with Lara Trump, co-chair of the Republican National Committee, believes Trump will pressure Islamabad to release their leader. They are gathering support from Pakistani-American lawmakers, seeking a congressional letter demanding Khan’s release.
However, Pakistan’s ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party dismisses the notion as a “joke”, arguing that Trump’s aides have assured them he will not interfere in Pakistan’s internal affairs.
Zalmay Khalilzad, a senior U.S. diplomat with ties to Republican administrations, has expressed concern about Khan’s detention, urging Pakistani authorities to consider his release. This statement has raised alarm bells in Islamabad.
Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center, warns that Trump’s silence on Khan’s case could be interpreted in different ways by both the PTI and the PML-N.
While PTI supporters hope for Trump’s intervention, they acknowledge that they don’t expect immediate action. They argue that the current situation in Pakistan, marked by alleged restrictions on social media, suppression of free speech, and human rights violations, necessitates Trump’s attention.
This debate highlights the complex relationship between Pakistan and the United States, where domestic politics and foreign policy intertwine. As Trump’s term unfolds, his stance on this issue will be closely watched by both sides.
