**Imphal, Manipur:** A tense situation continues in Manipur’s Jiribam district following an encounter between suspected Kuki insurgents and security forces on Wednesday. The clash left ten people dead, and six individuals remain missing, including three children and three women.
Manipur Police confirmed the missing persons during a press conference today, identifying the deceased as suspected militants. The police also clarified that the missing individuals were internally displaced persons (IDPs) who were reported missing on Wednesday. Two bodies found at the site of the clash were identified as elderly Meitei individuals, burnt inside a structure set ablaze by militants.
The incident began at 2:30 pm yesterday when suspected militants armed with RPGs and assault rifles attacked the Borobekra police station and subsequently a nearby CRPF camp. The CRPF retaliated, resulting in a 45-minute gunfight.
Police have launched a search operation to locate the missing individuals. Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, and the Central Reserve Police Force have been deployed and will respond to any further attacks.
Meanwhile, civil society groups of the Kuki tribes claimed the ten killed in the gunfight were village volunteers and alleged that the CRPF opened fire without provocation. The security forces, however, released visuals of weapons seized from the site, including an RPG launcher and assault rifles, supporting their assertion that the deceased were militants.
