**Wenzhou, China** – A new study by researchers at Wenzhou Medical University has revealed a strong link between sleep patterns and successful aging. The study, published in the journal BMC Public Health, analyzed data from over 3,000 participants aged 60 and older, all of whom were free of major chronic diseases in 2011.
The research defined successful aging as the absence of major chronic diseases, good cognitive and mental health, and no physical impairments.
Analyzing sleep duration over several years, the team identified five distinct trajectories: normal-stable, long-stable, decreasing, increasing, and short-stable. The study found that individuals with increasing and short stable sleep patterns had significantly lower odds of successful aging. Those with decreasing sleep patterns also showed reduced odds.
“These findings underscore that chronic sleep deprivation, as well as the patterns of increasing and decreasing sleep duration, are not mere age-related changes,” the team stated in the paper. “They emerge as pivotal indicators of obstacles in the pursuit of successful aging.”
The study suggests that maintaining stable and adequate sleep durations, neither too short nor too long, may be key to promoting healthy aging. The research calls for greater awareness of sleep patterns in middle-aged and older adults as an indicator of overall health and successful aging.
