**Hyderabad, India (November 11, 2024):** Dhanalakota Vaikuntam Nakash, a renowned Cheriyal artist, is celebrating a golden jubilee of dedication to the art form. His home in Hyderabad serves as a vibrant hub for the 400-year-old tradition, where he works alongside his family, keeping the art alive.
Vaikuntam belongs to one of the few families who continue to practice this unique form of art, known for its vibrant local motifs and storytelling narratives. He began learning the art from his father, Venkata Ramaiah, who was the last remaining artisan in Cheriyal village. Vaikuntam recalls his father’s impressive scroll paintings depicting Puranas, which were used by traveling storytellers.
Over the years, Vaikuntam has adapted to new avenues of expression, incorporating traditional narratives onto various mediums like ceramic and wooden plates, creating a modern appeal while staying true to the Cheriyal art’s essence. He has also incorporated local themes and rural subjects into his work, capturing the essence of village life through vibrant colors and detailed depictions.
