Sun Nov 10 19:50:08 UTC 2024: ## Iran and Saudi Arabia Boost Security Cooperation in Rare High-Level Meeting
**Tehran, Iran -** In a significant step towards mending ties, Saudi Arabia’s top military official, General Chief of Staff Fayyad al-Ruwaili, visited Tehran on Sunday for talks with Iranian officials. This high-level meeting, the first since the two countries restored relations last year, marks a major development in their long-strained relationship.
General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s Chief of Staff, met with his Saudi counterpart at the Iranian Armed Forces General Staff Headquarters. The meeting focused on strengthening defense diplomacy and expanding bilateral cooperation. Bagheri reportedly proposed that the Saudi navy participate in Iranian naval exercises next year, either as participants or observers.
“The development of defence diplomacy and the expansion of bilateral cooperation are among the main topics of this meeting,” stated Iran’s official news agency IRNA.
This meeting comes on the heels of a phone call between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Pezeshkian explained his inability to attend the upcoming Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Riyadh due to scheduling conflicts and confirmed that Iran would be represented by the first vice president.
Experts see this meeting as a positive step forward in Iran-Saudi relations, particularly considering the potential for increased tensions in the region. “They’re trying to build a sort of confidence when it comes to collective action against collective threats,” remarked Iranian affairs expert Tohid Assadi.
The meeting follows years of strained relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, marked by proxy conflicts in Syria and Yemen. In 2016, the two nations severed ties after attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran sparked by Riyadh’s execution of Shia Muslim leader Nimr al-Nimr.
However, in March 2023, the countries agreed to re-establish relations, with Chinese mediation playing a key role. The current meeting further underscores their commitment to improving relations and fostering cooperation in the region.
