Mon Nov 11 15:08:24 UTC 2024: ## Massive Fire Erupts at Gujarat Refinery, Benzene Tank Engulfed in Flames
**Vadodara, India** – A large-scale fire broke out on Monday afternoon at the Gujarat Refinery of the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) in Nandesari, engulfing a 1000-kiloliter Benzene storage tank.
The fire, which began around 3:30 pm, sent emergency crews scrambling to the scene. Eleven fire tenders were deployed to battle the blaze, while the refinery’s emergency response team, aided by the adjacent water sprinkler system, worked tirelessly to contain the flames.
Benzene, a highly flammable and volatile liquid, is a natural component of crude oil. Its vapors are heavier than air, posing a serious risk in poorly ventilated or confined areas.
While the cause of the fire remains unknown, IOCL officials have stated that the refinery’s operations are otherwise normal.
Ambulances were observed rushing in and out of the refinery, raising concerns about potential casualties. IOCL officials are gathering information on employees who may have been in the line of danger.
Senior police officials, the district collector, and the industrial disaster response team arrived at the scene Monday evening. Traffic police were also called in to manage crowds gathering on surrounding roads.
Congress leader Ami Ravat, who arrived at the site, demanded that the district collector declare a major emergency, citing potential health hazards to the city.
Meanwhile, on a different note, Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh, at the young age of 18, will face off against World Champion Ding Liren in the 2024 World Chess Championship, scheduled for Singapore. Gukesh, the youngest ever winner of the Candidates tournament, is being tipped as a potential favorite by top grandmasters. The 14-game classical match boasts a prize fund of $2.5 million.
