**Kolkata, India** – A 44-year-old professor at Jadavpur University, Mainak Pal, was found dead in a hotel room in Uttarakhand on Friday, sparking shock and grief among his colleagues and students. Police suspect the death to be a suicide, as Pal was found with deep cuts on his hands and neck.
Pal had travelled to Uttarakhand for a short trip with friends, but decided to return to Kolkata early. He checked into a hotel in Lalkuan and was scheduled to board a train home the next morning. According to reports, Pal had expressed to his friends that he missed his daughter and wanted to be home.
When Pal’s family was unable to reach him by phone on Friday evening, they contacted the hotel. Hotel staff forced entry into the room and discovered Pal’s body in the bathroom.
The Philosophy professor’s sudden death has left colleagues and students at Jadavpur University in shock. “Pal left a deep imprint as a teacher,” said Partha Pratim Roy, General Secretary of the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association. “We are in deep shock since we heard about his death. He was a lovable person and popular among students and the fraternity. The entire JU family is shell-shocked.”
Pal was an alumnus of Presidency College, Kolkata, and had worked at two West Bengal government colleges before returning to Presidency University as a teacher. He joined Jadavpur University in 2022 as an associate professor.
Police are currently investigating the incident and have not ruled out any possibilities.
