**Cape Town, South Africa:** Prince William has described the past year as the “hardest” of his life, revealing that both his wife Catherine and father, King Charles III, battled cancer.
The Prince of Wales, who was in South Africa for his Earthshot Prize initiative, shared his personal struggles with reporters on Thursday. He spoke candidly about the impact of the health challenges, saying “Honestly, it’s been dreadful.”
Earlier this year, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles, 75, had been diagnosed with an undisclosed cancer and would withdraw from public duties for treatment. Shortly after, Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42, revealed that she had also been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy.
While both royals have made limited returns to public duties, Charles continues his treatment. Catherine has said she has completed her chemotherapy and looks forward to taking on more engagements.
“I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done,” William said. “But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”
Despite the difficult year, William remains dedicated to his work, including his Earthshot Prize and Homewards initiatives. He acknowledged that while he appears relaxed, he is “just cracking on” and striving to maintain a balance between his duties and family life.
The royal family has faced further challenges this year, stemming from ongoing tensions with Prince Harry. Harry’s relationship with his family has deteriorated since he and his wife Meghan stepped back from royal life in 2020. Reports suggest that William and Harry have not spoken in two years.
